My Students

My 3rd graders at this K-5 elementary school in a large urban school district get so excited about playing the recorder. The district has given me enough recorders for each student to have one, but they cannot take them home at all. Because they do not have funds to purchase their own instruments, it limits their progress to what we can do during their weekly general music classes. Also, I have not been given any curriculum materials and had to piece together things this year. I made my own “recorder belts” for the Recorder Karate system that I used. This project would enable me to purchase all of the curriculum, belts and recorders for next year’s 3rd graders at my school.

This school is a 100% poverty school where children struggle to have school supplies and properly fitting clothes for school every day.

This project will enable my students to continue excelling in their musical studies and allow them to have a positive experience at the same time.

My Project

3rd graders at my school struggle with basic reading skills and must pass a state mandated reading test in order to be promoted to the 4th grade. Playing the recorder helps them with literacy skills as we learn how to read music for the first time in elementary school.

Being able to have their own recorder to take home and practice is essential in reinforcing the skills that we practice in their weekly general music classes.

This project will give every 3rd graders their own instrument and book as well as curriculum materials for me as the teacher to use in future years. It also supplies the reward belts that students get so excited about after they have learned to play their songs.
