My Students
For some of my students, band is the happiest time of day. They get to sit in a room with their friends creating beautiful music, as well as learning skills that will last a lifetime.
My school is a very rural school in the middle of the Arizona desert.
Many of my students do not have running water. Over 65% of my students qualify for free or reduced price lunch. Due to massive budgetary cuts, we do not often receive new things. Despite rough living conditions, my students display remarkable resilience on a daily basis. They always have a smile on their face and they find joy in the smallest things. They are a blessing to work with.
My Project
I am directing a steadily growing band program. There is growing interest each year. We have at least one of most instruments, but the French Horn is not one of them. We do not have one at all. However, several of my students have asked me "If we get a French Horn, can I play it?" It is difficult to tell interested students that we cannot provide them with a standard band instruments because we do not have the money in the school budget. This French Horn will bring joy, music, and opportunity to underprivileged 4th through 8th grade students. I will also be able to use this instrument in demonstrations for my elementary students.
This project will bring music to the lives of the students that play the French Horn, but also to their classmates and parents.
This project will allow students to learn skills that prepare them for the future. This project will also provide an unprecedented musical opportunity to my students not currently available. My youngest students will also be exposed to a new instrument that they have never seen before.
