Students need hands-on experiences in science to encourage them to pursue careers in science. I teach 6-8 grade science at a high poverty school in Wisconsin.
Often my students do not have the background and hands-on experiences that other students are exposed to. If students are not exposed to hand-on inquiry experiences they often do not pursue advanced science classes in high school and careers in science. In order to continue to offer these hands-on experiences we need money for supplies. Our students' families often are at the poverty level and simply cannot afford to cover the costs of consumable lab materials. Our school budget has decreased every year to the point where our science budget is nil.
By offering these experiences I can help give them the edge they may need to succeed in science. I have dissected frogs in science for many years and I still have students who come to me and state that this was a very memorable experience and it helped them in their high school biology classes. I do realize that some students may be against using once-living specimens for science and I do respect that decision with no consequences.
Your donations help my students to experience a hands-on investigation that is memorable for a life-time. This experience may spark an interest in pursuing advanced level courses in high school and science careers in college and help keep the United States at the top of our game in science and technology advances.
