Help me give my students develop a “Book Buddies” service-learning project with the 4th grade classrooms at Moore Elementary School and our 9th and 10th grade people.

Overview: The Hoover 9/10 iJAG is developing a “Book Buddies” service-learning project with the 4th grade classrooms at Moore Elementary School. Seven 9th and 10th grade iJAG students will travel to Moore Elementary School weekly beginning in April. The high school students will each partner up with one 4th grader. We will find a space to pair up and read 2-3 books each visit. Alternating between the high school student and the 4th grade student. The high school students will gain better public speaking, leadership and responsibility skills. The elementary students will gain a role model, reading practice and listening skills.
Objectives: 9/10th Grade: The high school students will gain better public speaking by slowing down and speaking louder while reading to their younger “Book Buddy”. The 9/10 students will gain leadership skills by listening and mentoring their 4th grade “Book Buddy”. The 9/10 iJAG students will develop responsibility skills by being part of a group that is counting on each other to show up each week, each 9/10 student will be responsible for packing their “Book Buddy” backpack each week to include a variety of book choices.
4th Grade: The elementary students will gain a role model in a local older student this will aid in school spirit also. Reading practice is fundamental to developing fluent literacy, a weekly Book Buddy partnership will allow consistent reading practice. Listening skills will be strengthened by both groups of students as they will alternate reading to each other.
