This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our school is one of the largest Title I public schools in New York City located in Elmhurst, Queens. Our families are deeply impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. This year, my remote Kindergarten class is comprised of both general and special education students. It's been such a challenge for my students to learn at home with limited resources and school supplies they have.

I hope to help my Kindergarten students build the passion for reading by providing them with new word family big books to read as a class during remote learning.

The time that I have with my Kindergarten students is very precious since it is where most of their learning takes place!

My Project

Learning word families is so important in Kindergarten. It helps children build vocabulary and understand spelling patterns as they read. Word recognition also helps early readers build fluency in reading.

With this new set of "word family'" big books, students will learn 20 new word families to help them read rhyming words and learn new vocabulary words!

One of the best ways to introduce spelling patterns, vocabulary, and rhyming is to read read read! This set of "Big Books" is fun, exciting, and engaging for my students. With your support, we are able to make this set of big books a part of our everyday learning during literacy and reading time!
