My students crave variety when it comes to recess. Hula hoops and jump ropes are getting old. Basketball would not only satisfy their hunger for more activity choices, but it would also promote team-building and sportsmanship.
My students attend an old school in the midst of abandoned buildings and vacant lots.
The school is located in an urban area with very few houses. Many students are bussed in from similar neighborhoods. 94% of the students attending our school are economically disadvantaged and 100% of our students receive free breakfast and lunch every day. They are awesome children and they rely on the school to fuel, support and nurture their dreams.
My Project
My students will be able to play basketball during recess and class game time. The basketball hoops are portable, so they can be used inside or outside depending on the weather. Our resources are limited so they have few choices for physical activity and our school has not had a gym teacher for several years.
Donations to fund the hoops would improve the daily recess and/or game time for my students.
Research has found daily physical activity to be a strong catalyst when it comes to students being able to focus better during class, therefore leading to an increase in student achievement.
