About My Students

My advisory, led by Ben, is a diverse group of learners from different ethnic backgrounds and socio-economic statuses. They are very interested in establishing a strong school culture in our brand new high school. One of the first things they asked about was for a basketball goal to play during lunch. I mentioned that they could help me by writing a grant and they were excited to do so. They really would like to help the school by getting this grant fulfilled.

The students chose to work together to complete this grant to improve school culture in our brand new school. Although we did not have the funds in the school account, the students were determined to get the basketball goal to play with through writing this grant.

Learning basketball helps develop teamwork skills. Students on each team learn to rely on each other to be there to help run plays and strategize against an opponent. My advisory also learned leadership skills through developing and planning this grant request.

Teamwork is extremely important in today's workforce. People rarely complete jobs alone. It is important for students to work together to be able to establish and complete goals.

In Their Own Words

Our school is in need of a basketball hoop. Many students wish to play but cannot. We are a new school and many kids here don't know each other. We think that having a basketball hoop would help people come together and become friends.

We would like a basketball hoop because we are trying to build a sense of community from the court and have a little fun during school. We also need a hoop so our school team can practice together.

We will make and distribute fliers and give them to every student to bring home and share with their parents. We are hoping that many families and community members can donate money on this website.

We will also keep the school focused on our grant and remind them weekly about where we are in our goal.

This project is important to my school community and ourselves because playing basketball is a good way for people to meet people and make friends. This would help my school community because we are a new school.

A lot of kids do not know each other. Some kids also have a hard time meeting new people. We think that a basketball hoop would help in breaking down some of those barriers.

Our school basketball team also has not way to train for the upcoming season without one.
