Hoop Dreams

My students need 2 basketball rims, a court stencil, and 10 basketballs to enhance their physical and cognitive abilities.

This project is fully funded

I teach at an at-risk, alternative school in Katrina-hit Louisiana. The majority of my students have been relocated and still suffer from the aftermath and disasters of the storm. Most of the children here have little or no encouragement or motivation to excel in education.

Sports is all my students know and all they care for. Learning is not enforced as important in their homes, so their perception of school is dim. Through basketball I have began to teach math concepts and play literacy and grammar games that excite the children. Our school doesn't have a budget for new equipment and the existing goals are made of wood and bent, rusted rims. We need your help!

I am asking, if not begging for help in buying 10 new basketballs, 2 new hoops and a court stencil so I can make the court more attractive. It serves to improve my classroom instruction, but also goes a long way in improving this community.

The goals and balls are an excellent resource in teaching children who otherwise don't find value in education. By using what they know and love the children are beginning to understand educational concepts and the more they understand the more willing they become to explore even more. I've spent my money and time to the best of my ability making this school a better place, but now I need partners who will stand with me and help me change the lives of children who should never be given up on.
