Imagine being 7 years old and coming to school in a new country where everyone speaks a different language then you. You are also expected to follow rules and do activities that you don't understand. This is a typical beginning for many of my students. On top of this difficulty, many of my students come from a country where their young eyes have seen such devastation and terrible things.
As their English as a New Language teacher I take them under my wing and give them as much emotional and educational support as they need.
My students thrive when their classroom has pictures and words that they can make connections to from their prior knowledge and their lives in their home country. When I see their faces light up with beautiful smiles as they listen to a story or watch a video with images and characters from their culture it brings such joy to my heart.
My Project
The students in my classroom come from many diverse backgrounds from all over the world. Some of my students come to school from a homeless shelter but no matter what they are eager to learn how to read English. They are always walking into my classroom with big smiles on their faces. Learning English can be very difficult but it is even harder when there are no leveled books to learn from in the classroom. We are constantly borrowing leveled books from other teachers since my classroom doesn’t have any leveled books. New leveled books would greatly enhance my students learning and teach them how to be a reader.
Having leveled books in my classroom will facilitate my students love of learning English.
The requested Leveled Book Library (Gr 1) will help my students learn to become English readers without us having to disturb another classroom to borrow books. Being the English Language teacher, learning with new books will help my students learn the English language even more.
