My Project
In the beginning of kindergarten, I focus on learning the letter names and sounds of the alphabet. Our district adopted UFLI as our phonics curriculum. UFLI focusses on taking the letter sounds and manipulating those letters to make words. The students have been making word chains early on in kindergarten (am, Sam, sat, etc.). Currently, the majority of the phonics instruction is done by having the students write the words on whiteboards. I would like to provide the kindergarten students with different tools to practice creating words using the letters and sounds that are taught during whole group phonics instruction.
All of these phonics activities and puzzles will provide kindergarten students with tools to help build foundational skills for reading and writing.
Having word activities and puzzles will enhance the students phonics skills and also help establish social bonds with one another as they work together to complete these phonics activities. With the vivid colors, and having the opportunity to manipulate pieces to solve each puzzle, I believe the students will be engaged and motivated to learn how to create 3 and 4 letter words.
These puzzles and activities could be utilized by many kindergarten students over the course of multiple school years.
