Hooked on Learning: Launching Our Student Fishing Club
Help me give my students the essential lures and baits they need for our new fishing class—a peaceful and hands-on learning experience we created with the PE teacher to help students connect with nature and decompress.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Our class is excited to introduce fishing as a way to connect with nature, reduce stress, and reflect, all while fostering environmental stewardship. Together with my coworker from the PE class, we aim to create a meaningful space where students can unwind and engage in an activity that encourages mindfulness and respect for the natural world. Beyond just teaching fishing skills, this program highlights the importance of protecting ecosystems and understanding our role in preserving the climate and environment. We are also working to expand this into a school club, giving more students the opportunity to learn and experience the calming, eco-friendly benefits of fishing.
Using both monofilament and braided fishing lines helps teach our students how to minimize environmental impact and protect aquatic ecosystems.
Monofilament line, which breaks down more slowly, and braided line, which is more durable and reusable, offer lessons on choosing sustainable materials to reduce pollution in our waterways. The variety of fishing lures and bait kits, including soft plastics and hard baits, allows students to experiment with different fishing techniques, all while learning to select gear that is effective yet environmentally conscious. The fishing tackle backpacks and organized tackle boxes support responsible equipment management, preventing litter and encouraging students to take care of their gear and the environment during outdoor lessons.
The fishing rods and reels we’ve chosen, such as the MACH 1 baitcast combos and Abu Garcia spinning reels, are beginner-friendly but built to last, reducing the need for frequent replacements and waste. The fish landing nets promote safe catch-and-release practices, which help maintain healthy fish populations and ecosystems. With these resources, we hope to nurture a generation of students who appreciate nature deeply and practice sustainable habits, ensuring that they can enjoy and protect the environment for years to come.
