My students need small group sets of chapter books to improve literacy including Charlotte's Web, The River, Room One, and The Lion Witch and the Wardrobe.
Do you remember the feeling of getting transported to another place and time just by diving nose first into a wonderfully written chapter book? Did you get to have teacher led discussions that improved your comprehension and deepened your understanding of the author's purpose for writing the story?
My students are very energetic and lively young fifth graders in a lower socioeconomic school in town.
They are excited about learning and love to explore their world around them in new ways besides just boring and tedious worksheets. Our school is an OKA+ school so we try to integrate the arts (rhythm, dancing, drama, and visual art) in to our everyday curriculum. My favorite part of getting up and going to work everyday is getting to see their bright and shining faces as I greet them at the classroom door every morning.
My Project
With these classic children's literature small group sets I will be able to group my students according to their reading level and have a rich piece of text for them to learn from. I will foster engaging conversations about the literary elements in each of the stories. My students will be able to develop the love of reading by learning to understand the deeper meaning to the beloved stories. For a culminating project I will have each group create a presentation on their book that will hook the other readers in our class into reading their story.
Donating to fund this project will help my students to realize that they are important.
Many times my students are left out because parents are busy trying to keep food on the table. I want my students to have fun learning and I believe the gift of these materials will help them do just that.
