This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students and I are in an inner-city immigrant neighborhood in Queens, New York. We are a Title I school where English is the second language.
My students come from various countries and we enjoy learning about each other.
They work very hard and are super eager to learn. I also enjoy helping their parents, who have little or limited English, the same way teachers helped me and my parents when I first came to second grade.
My Project
A teacher's priority is to instill a love for books. Having multiple copies on a series book is very important. This way, I can group my struggling readers and get them hooked on one book from classic book series such as Henry and Mudge, Biscuit and Danny the Dinosaur. This will entice them to look for other books in the series in our class library. With multiple copies of the same title, students will be introduced to the characters and the vocabulary that is repetitive in these easy readers. Then there is much more of a chance that these students will pick out another book in the series and will be successful readers on their own.
