My Students

This class consists of 21 students. The school is 68% free and reduced lunch. Many of the students do not have a way to get to the library. My desire is to have a classroom collection to help these students become better readers. My students are encouraged and challenged on a daily basis to apply their knowledge to real-world situations. They read for a minimum of fifteen minutes daily in the classroom. They spend most of their day actively involved in hands-on learning and experiments.

My students are eager learners excited about school and learning.

Our school is a Title I school with over 60 percent receiving free or reduced lunch. Although my students face economic challenges at home, they are excited from the time they enter school until they leave. They look forward to learning new concepts and ideas, exploring through the use of manipulatives and technology, and sharing what they've learned through projects and application.

My Project

What’s your best idea for engaging families in your students’ learning, in or out of the classroom?

My classroom is a diverse mixture of eager learners who come to school daily looking forward to learning.

The students that are struggling are the students who have low reading and literacy scores and phonic skills. The majority of those students come from low-income, transient, or ESL families. In order to engage these families in and out of the classroom is to invite them to literacy events inside the school and classroom. One idea that I have is to encourage them to read with their students during reading class. My idea is to have them read guided leveled readers in class or for homework. Students will use books that meet their reading levels so they will feel comfortable reading and their families will also feel comfortable reading them. For the students' families that have language barriers, they will use audio books.

My class participates with the school wide program DEAR (Drop Everything and Read). Most students have library books but others often rely on the books in the classroom. My classroom library is minimum. I have some story books and a few chapter books, but feel my students would benefit greatly from an assortment of leveled readers and books that meet their interests.

These book sets would improve my students' literacy and comprehension skills. It would also help their parents feel they are more connected with their child's education by being able to read with them daily. They will have more of a variety of books to choose from which will get them excited and interested in reading.
