My Students

I work at an Arts Magnet Elementary School in the Bay Area. My students come from a wide range of socio-economic and racial backgrounds, this includes white, African American, Asian, Hispanic, and Arabic students. Many of the students attending our school have a harder time accessing curriculum taught in a more traditional manner.

Through arts integration, we are able to make much more of the mandated curriculum both more accessible and more thought provoking!

These students become very reflective and creative learners.

My Project

This project involves adding some amazing new books to my classroom independent reading library and flexible seating for more anxious students. After the year we've all gone through, I wanted to include more current titles focusing on inclusion, community, nature, and diversity! My new students have been learning from home this past year and many have been isolated from the support of their school and peer communities. Building a strong classroom and school community, will be more important than ever this year.

Many of the books I have chosen focus on current social and emotional issues facing children today.

They come highly recommended and will help me build a supportive and inclusive classroom community. Students will be able to read these books independently, with their older reading buddies and hear them as teacher read alouds. I also plan to share these with my grade level colleagues.

The cushion seats will add to both this independent reading environment, helping fidgety students stay focused on reading, and during class instruction to stay focused at their seats.
