Honoring Our Elders, Intergenerational Storytelling

This project needs digital voice recorders to assist students in our living history, intergenerational, community workshop program that brings students and senior citizens together for a personal sharing that encourages interpersonal conversation.

Rock Creek Forest Elementary fifth graders will participate in the Honoring Our Elders living history project. This project will be conducted during Language Arts (reading) classes; there are four classes of approximately 21 students. Groups of four to six students will work together. Honoring Our Elders is an intergenerational community program that brings together students and seniors for a personal sharing. This program provides students with an opportunity to learn about the past from primary sources. They hear how people experienced life before e-mail, ipods, and even television. They learn about the many sacrifices made during wartime and the Great Depression. They hear personal accounts of racial and religious discrimination. The conversations prompt students to ask questions, and the knowledge gained from their exchanges with the elders becomes part of the students’ own history. When elders share stories about significant memories, an intimate and powerful exchange occurs as the events of the past are brought to life for a new generation. Intergenerational storytelling enriches the study of history, supports a curriculum of caring, strengthens the role of elders in our society, and reinforces oral and written language skills. Our need for digital voice recorders will allow us to preserve and share the elder stories and assist the students in preparing their oral and written presentation. The students achieve the following learning objectives: Students gain knowledge about the past by listening and interviewing the elders, and by interpreting and writing about the experiences of the elders; Students come to understand many of the social, technological, and economical differences between present and past; Students learn to examine stories for important themes and values, and transcribe oral stories into interesting written accounts, illustrate specific aspects of stories, and retell stories in their own words; Students develop and enjoy relationships with seniors in our community and the elders benefit from their interactions with the students. The final performance, where students present their interpretations of the stories to classmates, teachers, parents, and seniors, enables students to publicly share their newly acquired knowledge and friendships. Teachers and parents, who have participated in this program in the past, have found the interaction between students and elders to be deeply moving. Families report that this interaction between generations motivates their children to seek out elders in their families and their communities, to ask questions, and to learn, tell and preserve stories about a world beyond their experiences.
