Honoring Hispanic Heritage

My Students

As my year sixth at my school is starting, I have gotten to know this school and its heart. I was overwhelmed by the parents and students, and the drive they have to learn and support teachers and faculty. Our school is diverse in many ways. We have many different languages and religions represented. We have an extremely high population of ESE students, who require intensive reading and math intervention.

What I love about my school is that the families here love to learn, and the parents are instilling that in their students.

So each student, no matter where they are in their learning journey, is trying and working to be a better student. This past year, I embarked on an even bigger journey as I have become CRES Literacy Coach. I have been given this amazing opportunity to work with all grade levels and all students as they learn to read.

My Project

Each year our school is trying to do better when it comes to appreciating and honoring different cultures. This project focuses on honoring the Hispanic community and culture. In our community we have a lot of Hispanic people and communities. I am requesting books about Hispanic people and written by Hispanic writers to help my students understand and appreciate Hispanic culture.

Our school would like to have books readily available, all year long, that are written by Hispanics and that are about influential Hispanics.

We want every child to see themselves reflected in the books we highlight in our school. These books would be available in classrooms and in our media center for students to access and read.
