My Project
Patterns are everywhere, especially in nature. Our students are learning about patterns and 3D casting. We've learned that the most ergonomic form or shape objects in the real three dimensional world want to come together into the the hexagon. Nowhere else can we see this so readily apparent in nature than in a honeycomb of a bee colony. We can replicate finding some natural honeycomb by getting the foundation for frames that go into modern Langstroth beehives. These foundations have a 3D texture of hexagons on them designed to encourage bees to continue to draw out their comb on the foundations. We can pull a casting of this pattern off of the foundations with moldable fiberglass. Lastly, students will plant rhododendron flowers and identify the patterns it produces.
