This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our students come from all over the metro Phoenix area and typically from lower socioeconomic situations. We are a public school, but our students apply to attend as our enrollment is limited to about 400. This application process demonstrates that our students want something more from their high school experience: a challenge.

Intensely curious and motivated, our students attend knowing they will be working harder than their peers at comprehensive campuses.

This particular group of seniors excels in academics, interpersonal skills, and professional skills. They continue to thrive when presented with opportunities to be creative, engaged, and caring individuals during these challenging times.

My Project

I've used this book for 3 years in a row, with continued rave reviews from our students. The book provides excellent grist for conversation about growing (emotionally, spiritually, mentally) as students transition into college and adulthood.

While we continue to revise curriculum around the text, the heart of our approach continues to be processing the reading through group discussion and the sharing of diverse perspectives.

We hope to add some problem-based learning next year when we will ask our seniors to find one idea of value in the book and teach the idea in the classroom of a lower grade level. Their goal will be to create a lesson that connects emotionally, spurs a reflection from the other students about their values and thought processes, and creates a lasting positive impact for the individual and our community.
