Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

This upcoming year, I will be working with 8th grade students who have Individualized Education Programs tailored to their needs. My students need extra support in math and I am coming up with strategies to provide them with the scaffolding that they need.

With a Cricut machine, I will be able to cut out paper manipulatives and create classroom posters for students to explore and make sense of math concepts.

In 8th grade, my students are struggling with their multiplication facts, which hold them back from being on grade level. With paper manipulatives, in this case- tangible paper cut-outs, students are able to model rows of numbers so that they could make sense of multiplication. Die-cut patterns can also be useful for math facts (writing numbers on die-cut shapes and interchanging the factors for students to practice) and creating different bar graphs to present data sets.

Currently, there are no die-cut machines that are accessible to staff at my school. With a Cricut, I can create posters and visual aids in a shorter amount of time. My students will have access to so many more resources in my classroom to help them apply math concepts. Having paper manipulatives will also be more effective and cost-efficient since students can take them home.
