My Students
Each year we have more and more students who have families struggling to make it and who often have to move in with relatives after a job loss. There are some families that are homeless and need more assistance. In our district we also have a growing population of teen homeless students. We try to help students in need when we can, at our level or older students. Many also come from military families. The students at our school really want to make good choices and we have a staff that is working to help guide students. Our staff continually goes above and beyond to help their students. The school is based on the idea that we are all part of the same team, and we work towards helping all students. Almost 100% of certified staff work as mentors during their personal time to give students who need extra help the attention they need. We are working hard to make sure our students are prepared for the future. We have added a MakerSpace and are now working to extend our STREAM clubs.
My Project
Homeless students are a growing population for schools. One of the fundamental principals of human development highlights how safety and meeting basic needs must be met if a student is going to be able to learn and thrive. More and more students in our district experience being homeless, some due to the entire family being homeless, others are teens who have forced to leave home due to abuse or other issues.
Imagine trying to learn or enjoy your high school years when you do not have a home with a supportive family.
While some "couch surf" with friends, moving place to place without a stable environment, some live on the streets or in cars. Some are lucky enough to be in our districts teen shelter.
Students experiencing homelessness are often deprived of needed nutrition, adequate sleep, and often are in dangerous situations. This also has a negative impact on their education and their ability to participate in school activities.
Our elementary students want to make kits for homeless teens in our district that would have blankets, soap, toothbrushes and toothpaste, shampoo, and deodorant. They would make encouraging notes to put in the kits. The high school counselors would help identify students in need and help with the distribution.
Elementary students learn about and experience the joy of helping others. The high school students will have needed personal hygiene items and a blanket. The items, plus the cards and notes will help them know they are not forgotten. Often knowing someone cares helps those who are in difficult situations succeed.
