My Students

"I wish I can take this book home so Mami can read it to me" was the expression of one of the students in our classroom after reading the story "No, David, No!" by David Shannon during reading time. This is us! A group of students thirsty to learn and to listen to stories lead by a group of professionals exposing them to the best experiences to spark their imagination and promote a solid foundation during this early years.

Our students are like caterpillars; hungry for learning experiences sheltered into a cocoon called school and liberated by the stories we read to spark their imagination.

They are very unique because they come from different social, cultural and linguistic backgrounds including Haití, Bangladesh, Brazil, African Americans, Hispanics. Our students are also at different academic levels ranging from early learners to late learners.

Our family includes two students with special needs also.

With the reading of good quality books to develop moral values, tolerance and character development, we have been able to create a very positive environment in which our students practice what they learn and reflect on their actions. Together we will make a better world.

My Project

It is alarming to see how many preschool students come to school with limited expressive language. I can attribute this reality to the fact that we are living on a technology era in which children are exposed to very abstract experiences through electronic devices instead of hands on activities and book reading adventures.

Books are definitely the bridge to narrow the gap between school and home early connections and develop a stronger literacy foundation.

Once the love for books is nourished in the classroom is easy to spread it home too with a classroom based lending library.

The more books are read to our students and meaningful interactions are promoted, the more children learn expressive language, social skills, math skills and new vocabulary words. The more we read to them, the more places they will go.
