This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
There is a growing latin community in West Jordan, Utah. The students at OE have a wonderful library and they enjoy going to the school library to access a variety of books. Several students are new to the country and still enjoy reading in their first language. The library has provided the students with a small collection of books in Spanish. This helps the students feel welcome, safe and secure in their new English school.
My Project
Stephen Krashen, an educational researcher stated that the concept of the "home run book," a book that gives a reader a positive experience can be enough to create a permanent interest in reading. Many children have testified that the home run experience is real, that one book started them on the path to becoming dedicated readers (Kim and Krashen, 2000). A "Home Run" book is the first book that really excites a child. Students acquiring English may need more guidance to find this book because of unfamiliarity with the language and possibly with the types of books available. The library at OE has a small sections of books in Spanish for those who acquire Spanish as a first language. Today, there is a need for growing our small Spanish section since we have a growing population of Venezuelan refugees. These students have created a new home in West Jordan, Utah. 'Home Run" books are books that can be accessible to thesis students to encourage them to continue their love of reading. There are many books written by American authors that are translated in Spanish that can be enjoyed by our Hispanic student population. In addition, they can continue to read books written by a diversity of authors in the student's home language. It is the goal of the grant to purchase 'home run' books that will be accessible in the school library for our growing Hispanic student population.
