It's the last day of school, and I spoke with the kids about reading this summer. I told them I want them to read as much as possible this summer to keep up their skills. Several kids spoke up and said, "I don't have any books!". In my mind I was yelling, "What?". I started passing out books from my personal supply.
Books are so important, especially when my students have low reading levels to begin with.
I have to try to make this better.
These students attend a rural school, where many kids never travel outside of the area. In general, the families have other things to worry about than school. They are just trying to take care of their basic needs.
My Project
On the last day of school, I realized many of my students do not have any books of their own to read during the summer. I began passing out books I had purchased to make sure they had something. I am requesting books to have on hand to pass out if I have children who do not have any books. I have picked fun books that everyone will enjoy.
I have to change this!
My project is to get books to pass out to students to read over school breaks. I want to have packages of books ready for whoever needs them.
It's very difficult to keep student reading scores up when they can't read over the summer. It's very sad to me to think that kids don't have books to read. I want to send books home with the students to read during breaks to keep up their reading abilities.
