Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
The students at McDonough Middle in Hartford, Conn. are among the brightest, most determined and talented youth I have ever had the privilege to work with.
My students are courageous, resilient, funny, lovable and ambitious young people who are deserving of a quality experience at school.
Under the guidance of a superstar educator on my team, these same students stock up a small pantry in front of our school, regularly, with cans and non-perishables they bring from home. This "Little Food Pantry" is free and open to the community. These kids serve their communities even when there isn’t much to spare at home. My goal is to be able to give back to them.
As someone who works on a daily basis to help students process their social and emotional needs, my aim is to incentivize positive student engagement in the classroom and to provide more resources for my students, in preparation for their imminent academic and socio-emotional growth. This includes to surround my young people with motivational tools and to have resources readily available for them. My hope is that these additional supports and safeguards will allow my students to pay it forward within the school community.
My Project
As a Behavior Tech, I often help students to process how they are feeling and how to deal with conflict when problems arise throughout the school day. Our support team is constantly reinforcing the importance of non-violence and the power of positivity. These values may at times contradict some of the values that are taught at home or what kids see on TV, for example. This is particularly evident when it comes to watching my students responding to conflict. I strive to continue supporting students in finding ways to cope and respond when they experience problems in school and in life.
I've learned that kids are ready to be at school when they are FEELING GOOD about themselves and really WANT TO BE THERE.
On any given day, James forgot his backpack and had to rush out for school. Alex's mom was supposed to do laundry the night before but the washing machine broke. Or perhaps, she was too tired from work to get to it. Carlos hasn't had breakfast today. Joshua didn't have dinner last night.
I am requesting these items to better serve my students and create a comforting environment for them. I aim to surround them with positive motivation and have resources readily available for them. Any number of these resources would have made a huge difference this past year.
If I am able to help my kids address their needs, even in the smallest or most basic way, I know this project was a massive success. I appreciate your consideration and support.
