Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are a bunch of active, intelligent, teenagers, who are still discovering themselves. They are at a critical time in their life where their surroundings make a large impact on their overall being.

I teach 6th grade in a Chicago public school.

My school puts a lot of emphasis on the climate of the school and the classroom. Students need to feel safe and welcome before they can begin to learn in an environment. I teach math which is a scary subject for many, so I like to make my room as inviting and calming as I can to ease students anxiety. Once they feel safe and comfortable in the classroom they begin to open up and take the risks necessary to be successful in math.

My Project

One of the first steps to helping students be successful is having a warm and inviting classroom environment. This rug will help add a more inviting and homelike feel to the classroom. I have had students comment on how bright and cheerful my classroom was but how it could benefit from a rug by our meeting table. This rug will add more welcoming feel along with a place where we can hold class meetings to get out feelings, joys, and concerns in the classroom, which is the only way to have a successful community of learners.

I have great expectations for all of my students and I know they are going to have a great year.

This rug could help students feel more comfortable in school, which is very important for students who usually do not enjoy school very much.
