My Students
My students benefiting from this project are in a Title One school where the majority receive free or reduced price lunch. Many families receive meals/coats from our school's food pantry. They are hard working scholars who were doing well at school but now, are suddenly forced to work from home. I put out a survey to my class to see who needed help setting up their home learning spaces and three of my students said they did not have the basics: their own desks and desk chairs at home.
My Project
Over the past three decades, a growing number of studies have provided empirical evidence that the home learning environment (HLE) is an important predictor of differences in children’s academic and social development.
Now that my students are all learning from home, it is important they have their basic needs met like having a place to sit and a place to write and put their computers.
Low income students have been experiencing an opportunity gap in their educational experience and the Covid-19 pandemic is magnifying this gap.
This may seem like just three desks and chairs, but fulfilling this order will go a long way in our school community. These three students will feel supported in a major way and they can have a chance to win our school's home learning space contest!
This will not only boost the morale of the three students, but will also boost the morale of our entire school community because it will inspire more projects that will help get all two hundred and eighty of our students the materials they need to proposer academically and the motivation to continue to try their best while learning from home. When in-person school resumes, the desks and chairs will remain invaluable for students to have a place for completing homework throughout their time in middle school and continued into high school.
