Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Imagine a 4 year old Hispanic child being surrounded by talk about possible separation from family and, then being sent to school for the very first time, where they will be away from their family for most of the day. This can be a traumatic experience filled with fears and insecurities.

My classroom is made up of 23 4-year old English Language Learners who are economically disadvantaged.

100% of our students receive free breakfast and lunch which ensures that their physical needs are met. However, we must also ensure that their social-emotional needs are met and provide them with materials and experiences which gives my children a voice to express their inner most thoughts.

It is my goal to provide a nurturing environment that focuses on building a school family where children feel safe and secure. One that provokes and nurtures their curiosity, creativity and their natural desire to learn. I know that with the right help, I can make them feel as if our classroom is their home away from home and inspire a life-long love for learning.

My Project

These are a few of the necessities I think we will need to create a safe and nurturing environment for our children; one where they feel at home.

The doll house, furniture and dolls serve as a safe place where children who are too young to put feelings into words can create scenarios about how they are feeling and represent themselves in those creations.

The cars will also assist children to process their feelings of seperation and reunions.

The comfy couch will provide the children with a feeling of being in their own living room where they can relax, read a book and explore their world around them through books.

This donation would help make our classroom feel like home for my children where they can nurture love of learning.
