My Students

My students are hardworking and determined scholars from all walks of life. Daily, they are discovering and learning to embrace the benefits of education through various activities like reading, writing poetry, participating in Socratic seminars, creating visual assessments like poster summaries, hosting literature circles, and carrying on lively discussions. They have so much untapped potential and so many talents, that it never ceases to amaze me!

These scholars strive to work with me to provide a nurturing classroom community, where we all learn and grow together as a family.

It is amazing to watch my students learn and embody learning through restorative practice and other relationship building practices, making them student leaders and ambassadors, and me a facilitator of learning.

My students are resilient because, despite the many obstacles and opposing outside factors they face, they still show up every day, ready to learn. I have a classroom full of writers, readers, thinkers, innovators, leaders, artists, social activists, and even some future teachers who operate as teaching assistants daily! They are curious, proud, inquisitive, hard-working, out-spoken, humorous, and caring. Even on the less desirable days, the light of their vivid imaginations and eager minds shines through!

My Project

Students spend just as much time at school as they do at home and other places. Imagine the classroom being just as familiar and cozy and conducive to learning and growth as is home. Cultural familiarity coupled with academic relevance and rigor is optimal. We often talk about the WHOLE child, but fail to consider how important environment truly is.

Visual dressings such as cultural posters and fabrics that are familiar encourage trust and comfort, while the amenities of home foster motivation and confidence.

When we talk about diversity and cultural relevance, many fail to understand the environments that house scholars. Having a place where all your needs are met is crucial, from academic content, to personal appearance, to visual aids, posters and other comforts that soothe, calm, motivate and build confidence.

Think one-stop shop! The classroom can be a place where you check your knowledge or check your outfit, a place where you relax and meditate, or turn up and turn out scholarly products, however, it all depends on the condition of the environment, which can include a comfortable non-traditional place to sit, a calming decor to center the mind before engaging in rigorous content, multicultural literature in which scholars can identify, or something as simple as confidence-building through certain hygiene and grooming activities. The right classroom set-up provides opportunities for [self] discovery and development. A true home away from home!
