My Students
In a typical day in my classroom, we rehearse music from a wide variety of styles and historical eras. Jazz Band, Orchestra, Concert Band, Pep Band - that is what we do. For us to do this effectively, it is important to have all of the accessories that go along with playing music.
Ours is a four-year public high school with a one hundred year long tradition of quality music programs.
Students in our school go on to major universities all over the country and represent our school, community and state with great pride. We do live in a resort town, but that does not mean that any tourist money makes its way into the public school coffers. We deal with budget shortfalls just like ever school district. I try very hard to make sure the students in our program do not feel the impact of exterior economic influences. That is why we focus so heavily on empowering students through art in our school. It gives many of them a reason to come every day.
My Project
Often, a piece of music will call for a piece of equipment or accessory that a student may not own. I try to provide these types of musical necessities for students until they are in a position to purchase one for their own private use. Trombone mutes and violin shoulder rests may not seem like a big deal to the average person, but talk to a trombone player or violinist - they are an everyday item. I am also asking for a new style of saxophone harness - it works with all saxophones and is a much more ergonomically sound piece of hardware. By taking the stress off of the neck of the player, it will reduce the risk of long-term injury. Providing quality equipment for the students in our program is a high priority for me and the generosity of the donors through this website is continually astounding.
By providing the basic resources for the music students at our school, you have the opportunity to help them reach their full potential.
