My Project
Daily my students play xylophones. From the start of kindergarten all through 4th grade, my students experiment, explore, and create on xylophones. The creativity and problem-solving that comes forth on these xylophones are miraculous to watch. My students live for the xylophones and are continually inspired by them. We explore sounds and concepts such as high and low in kindergarten with these incredible tools. First grade through second accompanies all of our songs with them. Third grade cannot only play beautiful melodies, but learn notation, rhythm, and technique. Fourth grade does all of this and more. They astound me with their own musical creations on these same xylophones.
I would love to provide equity in xylophone playing for all my students.
If we could expand our materials to have a class set of xylophones, the efficacy of instructional time and student growth of learning would multiply. Xylophones are also my students with disabilities favorite instrument and inspire them to want to learn and participate. I teach three classes of students with autism and one class of functional life skills learners. Getting more xylophones allows one on one learning without waiting when which can often be a challenge with my exceptional learning students.
