This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Imagine uprooting your entire life and being transplanted to a completely foreign country. You walk into a classroom, you may not have ever had any formal education before, and you see an unknown alphabet strewn across hard walls that are trying their best to appear as inviting as possible despite the peeling paint. You have never written or read and you have a smiling teacher talking to you in a language you don't understand. These are the students I teach every day.
I work in a large school, in an even larger school district, with a very high immigrant population in South Central, L.A.
Many of my students have limited schooling in their own language and are now thrust into a formal school setting in a brand new and intimidating country. We move from learning letters to reading very quickly. I help students learn English while teaching them the 2nd and 3rd gr. curriculum they desperately need to become successful and move forward in their educational careers. My students have come from all around the world, from many different and often difficult situations. They hold the American Dream, but with extremely limited resources, they need the tools to achieve it.
My Project
As third graders, my students will be exposed to the SBAC test for the very first time; your donation will create a more secure test taking environment for my students. Additionally, more independent work will allow me to truly evaluate student progress. Students will have their own privacy partition to put on their desk during testing periods and a large timer to help them manage their time more effectively. These partitions will eliminate distractions and prevent students from looking onto their neighbor's paper. Since the kids all finish their tests at different moments, these partitions will make secondary activities less distracting to students still testing. My students will be thrilled to throw away the makeshift privacy partitions that I have created out of taped up, flimsy file folders. With your help, these privacy partitions will increase student focus, independent thinking, and achievement while taking tests.
As a first year teacher, it is clear to my students that my classroom is lacking some resources that they see their peers using in other teachers' classrooms.
I am doing my absolute best to provide my class with everything they deserve. These privacy partitions and timer will create a more secure and comfortable testing environment for my students.
