Hocus Pocus Everybody Focus

My students need sensory tools like yoga balls with stands, stretch bands, a weighted toy, and sensory balls to help them maintain focus in the classroom.

My Students

"I don't care how much power, brilliance or energy you have, if you don't harness it and focus it on a specific target, and hold it there you are never going to accomplish as much as your ability warrants." Zig Ziglar My students' brilliance is constantly hindered by their inability to focus.

I teach second, third, and fourth grade students in Texas with severe disabilities (autism and mental retardation).

They are all wonderfully different and have the biggest hearts you can imagine. My students face daily challenges of lacking the ability to stay focused, needing a sensory output, living in a lower socioeconomic area, and struggling with academic concepts.

My Project

Research shows that a child's age is equal to the minutes you have their attention. The average second, third, or fourth grader has an attention span of 7-9 minutes. My students are anything but average. My students have a shortened attention span, a disability like autism or mental retardation, and the need to move or release energy. We will use these as tools to help them maintain focus and release energy. The kids will be able to bounce and move on the yoga balls, stretch with the bands, work with the weighted dog on their lap, or squeeze a sensory ball while sitting at their desk or working at the teacher table.

Utilizing these tools will increase their attention span and help them focus on the task.

These are the tools we need for my students to work along side their peers and reach academic success.
