This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Predominately lower-income Hispanics make up 85% of our school. Many live in multi-family homes where extended families share one small house. We are in the highest bracket for free and reduced lunch in our district. Our school district gave free lunch to every student through October to help reduce expenses as we rebuild due to the natural disaster (Hurricane Harvey). Every single athlete was impacted by Hurricane Harvey. Two days after the worst of the storm our high school team started volunteering to local assistance such as Red Cross. Dozens of athletes came up to help distribute clothes, meals, or play with children.
These students lost a lot of time and stuff because of the hurricane.
We want to help the culture of our school get back on track.
My Project
Soon after the Hurricane disaster, it became rebuild mode. A high volume of our scholars lost their equipment for any sport. Our school never had baseball or softball so, we have no equipment to offer or to host. Baseball gloves, the buckets of baseballs/training balls, and an easy setup batting cage are basic tools and equipment that are required to become more efficient as athletes and scholars. The benefit of these tools applies to be an effective athlete and in everyday activities.
We want to create and establish an athletic culture as they deserve after the harsh times.
Most of our scholars that participate in school athletics lack baseball/softball gloves to practice or play in games. It's either their gloves are aged, worn-out, wrong size/broken; the player should not be in-confident about their glove performing its designed job. The 12.75" glove is for the outfielder's position, the catcher's mitts are for the catcher's position., and the 11.5" glove is typically for the infield positions.
The batting cage is for an easy setup in any indoor facility due to inclement weather. During or after a rainy day, the athletes lose practice time. The cage will enhance the efficiency of batting and pitching practice that would call for a field or at least an area for use. The hitting net is for warm-ups. The technology/GoPro will be used in practice during pitching and hitting sessions. Most of our athletes are learning the fundamentals of both pitching and hitting. We will use this to make adjustments to their mechanics. The housing for the camera is to protect and prevent from damage.
