I am the librarian in a Chicago Public elementary school, grades pre-kindergarten through eighth grade. Our school is located in an area that is depressed economically and challenged by other disruptive forces. Most of my students are struggling readers. This grant specifically addresses the needs of the middle school students, grades 5 - 8 who come to my library.
My students ask me if I have scary or funny books. They need to learn history. I have very few funny or scary titles. The history textbook is boring and I have few options to offer students. History can be an extremely dry, boring subject in elementary school!
Fortunately author Terry Deary can change all that. His books combine copious quantities of information with puns, wisecracks, sarcastic footnotes, and a breezy narrative style. Deary brings history to life! Terry Deary titles would make an excellent addition to our library. They are scary, funny, and packed with history. In my last school, A Wicked History of the World was so popular that I never got a chance to put it back on the shelves.
The Terribly True Series examines ghosts, crime, disasters, UFOs and more – exactly what middle school students want to read. Readers have so much fun that they don’t even notice that they are exercising their deductive reasoning skills and absorbing history. In the Time Detectives series, readers explore true historical mysteries through funny fictional tales. In the Fire Chief series, students learn about Prometheseus through historical fiction.
What a wonderful way to develop an interest in mythology! Other historical fiction is equally engaging. Many of Deary’s books are at a third or fourth grade reading level. Because of his content and writing style, they will be interesting to middle school students, including the eighth graders.
I would love to introduce Terry Deary to my students. The wacky titles, cover art, and illustrations draw students to these books. The excellent writing keeps them reading. Students devour each book and look for another. Reading ability increases and a love for history is born. Your gift would make the library a more exciting place for many students and help students develop the habit of finding materials in the library.
