History Through Music: The Great Depression

My students need supplemental books on the Great Depression, a CD listening center to listen to audio aids, and 4 storage bins.

FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. Broullire's classroom raised $587

This project is fully funded

My students love listening to music but don't fully understand that music is a huge part of history. I teach 10th and 11th grade DC and US History in at a public charter high school in Washington, DC. All my students are African-American, and 95% of my students live in Wards 7 and 8. Unfortunately, these are the wards most affected by poverty and crime in the District. While the surrounding community is not always an ideal environment for our students, our school provides students with a safe environment and caring teachers that prepare them well for college.

The Great Depression is a dynamic period in our nation's history (or at least should be taught that way). There are so many relevant and current examples to pull into this unit (especially today), but these stimulating examples often get lost in history classes. My students are much more engaged when they get to EXPERIENCE periods in history rather than read about the period in their textbooks. This is when I had the idea to integrate music into the unit.

There were so many powerful songs that came from this time period. Hearing Great Depression songs ("Brother Can You Spare A Dime," "White House Blues," "Rich Man, Poor Man,") will really boost their understanding. Also, more interesting supplemental reading (not their textbooks) will still allow them to read about the Great Depression and analyze primary sources.

Please make this dream a reality in my classroom. By listening to these powerful songs using a listening center, students will know and be able to analyze song lyrics as primary resources and representations of the past (and not just for the Great Depression). Your generous donation will also give them supplemental reading material on this subject that will help improve their literacy skills. You will make it possible for my students to experience history in a much more personal and in-depth manner and make those connections between the past and the present that are so vital to understanding history.
