My Students

There is a point of spark in every child every year where the desire to learn takes hold and teachers must run to keep up with the rush of excitement that students have for a class. For the first time in many years that spark was almost instantaneous in my classroom.

These bright and agile minds crave information and will quickly develop the independent skills that they need to drive their own learning.

They love reading more than children that I have worked with in some time. This year they have asked to examine federal and state law to be able to write new laws that are just and equitable. They are going to research their own family histories through a genealogy project that will enable them to connect their family's past to the history of the world. Many of these students live at or near poverty. They all live in a rural area in North Carolina that is the poorest county in the region. For these learners to come in to school with a thirst for an education and reaching for a future is beyond wonderful.

My Project

The thing we need are simple and reusable, just like the computers that the kids and I have put together to give them open access to information in the classroom. We need three new wireless adapters to connect those computers to the schools wifi network so the kids can work on projects at their own pace. Many of them do not have internet access at home. We need books that our media center doesn't have. These beautifully written classics speak to the issues that my learners are concerned with and will drive new ideas forward in the work that they are planning.

I am humbled and honored to work with children who have a passion to affect the world around them.

I can help them with the processes that they need to learn and develop if we have the resources that they need. When learners walk in the door with this much passion and with a spark this powerful it has to be fueled
