History Loved Through Pictures

My students need historical fiction picture books and interactive stories to help them connect to history.

FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. Elliott's classroom raised $385

My Students

Picture books are amazing ways to help teach history and famous historical events in a memorable way that students can connect to. Rather than just using textbooks which can be difficult and tedious, my students can learn to love history through the pictures and the stories these books carry.

Our school is a small public school with students from many different countries around the world, with varied life experiences.

Being small is an advantage, in which all the students know each other well, work together and take care of each other. Parents help in the classroom and the community spirit flourishes. Students share books with one another and discuss what they read in literature circles. Some students have the means to have books at home and others go to the library to get their books. We are currently reading the same books together and studying so many features of text as a group. My students love to read and are making incredible connections to stories we have completed together with ones we are currently reading. I would love to be able to read picture books to my students in the historical fiction genre and have books available for them to read and learn from as well. I would love to have them choose their own paths in history using interactive books.

My Project

I will read these books to my students to supplement our history and social studies lessons. We currently read from a text book but I would love to have historical fiction picture books that they can understand, enjoy and connect to our class lessons. These stories will leave them with a passion to learn more about history. These books will be left in the classroom library that I am trying to build and used to read to reading buddies and to each other. The interactive history books will allow students to choose the paths that they want to take in history and will completely engage them with the concepts they have to learn. My students will learn more about history because they will live it in the interactive texts and connect to the picture books.

My students will leave my classroom loving history and yearn to learn more because of the books that I have chosen.

Instead of solely learning from a textbook or short video clips that come with the program we use, they will have picture books to connect history to and interactive stories to become a part of. These books will improve my classroom because they will show my students that history is exciting, fun, and that amazing stories can be spun from the history of our country.
