My Students

Our school is nestled in the small town in North Carolina. We are a community Title I school with about 450 students, and have a growing ESL population. Students at our school love learning and take pride in being a Brown Cougar!

Our fourth graders are on amazing learning teams, changing classes and working together with 2 teachers.

Speaking, listening, reading and writing are the foundational building blocks on which all other learning is built. To deliver this instruction in a meaningful way we use a variety of resources, including rigorous text discussions, accountable talk, small group reading instruction, book clubs and whole group mini lessons that focus on common core standards. Considering that our physical building is over 40 years old and the curriculum is constantly changing, some of our materials are out of date. Students in fourth grade engage with nonfiction in both reading and writing.

My Project

In this unit of study, students will spend 4-5 weeks in interest-based book clubs. Students will study Westward Expansion, Post Civil War and The Great Depression by reading a variety of high quality historical fiction. Students in each book club will read the same novels and meet daily to discuss and study their books.

Fourth grade students will learn to determine themes, attend to major and minor characters, study primary sources, evaluate different perspectives and find thematic connections across texts.

Throughout this unit of study students will interpret texts, add to and revise their thinking, and synthesize information they learn.

Students will name their book club, develop norms for meeting, and write down reading assignments daily. When book clubs meet, students will have discussions about the topic learned in the mini-lesson for the day. They will use "talking sticks" to ensure that everyone participates equally. They will develop a deeper understanding of communication by using accountable talk. In order for a book club to be effective, students must be reading the same book and the book must be a "just right" level for the student. The materials for this project will provide student in every book club a historical fiction book that is perfect!
