This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Reading about different people and our history takes us to places we cannot easily go today. But using hands-on materials makes that journey even better!

I teach first grade in an urban school in Illinois.

Nearly all of my students receive free or reduced price lunch. Most of my students are English language learners. Despite challenges students face in light of hard economic times and violence in their neighborhood, my students come to school eager to learn.

My Project

We do not have a social studies textbook in our school, which allows me to draw upon a range of trade books to teach about the topics we study. However, having access to hands-on materials, such as replicas of historical objects, would make the content much more engaging for my students. The resource boxes I am requesting have a range of learning activities, and replicas of historical objects like a totem pole and the Declaration of Independence, and informational materials written at a level appropriate for my young readers. Having access to these materials will help my students, particularly my English language learners, visualize the concepts I am teaching and link essential vocabulary to concrete objects.

With your donation to this project of two resource boxes, you will make history come alive for my first graders.

History will no longer simply be in the pages of a book, but rather in the hands of my students. Thank you for your support!
