My Project
In 7th grade, students learn about westward expansion and its impact on Utah. The Donner Dinner Party is a powerful graphic novel that helps students connect with the challenges and experiences of people traveling west. The novel is written at a level that my students can easily access. As a result, they are able to engage with the history, think critically about the events, and make personal connections to the past.
I plan to pair this graphic novel with a hands-on simulation, allowing students to step into the shoes of pioneers facing difficult decisions on their journey.
Together, the reading and the simulation will give students a deeper understanding of the hardships of westward expansion, while also making history meaningful and interactive.
