My Students
My students range from 8th to 9th grades. They are 13 and 14 year olds. They are passionate for things they care about but also lose interest in things they don't gravitate to. I teach many special education students as well as high functioning students.
I teach a wide range of students from all walks of life with varying abilites and needs.
The socioeconomic status of my students ranges from some living in affluent neighborhoods while other families struggle economically. We also have a wide range of ethnic backgrounds including White, Polynesian, Asian, Hispanic and African American.
My Project
One of my goals in teaching history is to help students gain a better understanding of historical events. One way that captivates young adults is through reading historical fiction. I want to purchase two classroom sets of acurate historical fiction books so the students can read one book per semester. Through the reading of these books, I hope the students will be able to see history through the eyes of the characters in the books. I hope this will motivate them and spark their interest to learn and understand history better. In my experience, I have found it difficult to motivate students to appreciate history, but I have experiemented with some individuals and have had success. I would like to try to go futher with the whole class.
