My Project
I currently teach Advanced Placement U.S. and World History to students at 5 different High Schools throughout the School District of Philadelphia. What I like about the classes that I teach and the AP programs that I am involved with is they help to prepare the students for college.
Many of my students have been underserved in their traditional high school classes and so they have been chosen to participate in our district-wide AP program.
These classes are more rigorous and challenging than what many of them are used to but, they all are excited about taking the classes, being better prepared for college, and the opportunity to earn college credit while still in High School.
Throughout the year, my students have to complete independent reading assignments. Since there are so many topics in history that we do not cover over the course of the year, I try to provide my students a very diverse classroom library that contains books on all sorts of topics that fall within U.S. and World History.
I enjoy reading and want my students to develop that passion as well and it starts with getting to choose your own book to read.
Even though they have to read for independent reading, by providing a vast array of books for my students to choose from, they can pick out a book that interest them. Since they get to read something that they choose, it has the added benefit of them getting to enjoy reading, something that many of them, up to this point, have not done much of.
