This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach in a very diversified classroom. While all the students are classified as learning disabled, they are of different ethnicities. This special education class is comprised of high school freshman in a high-need community where over ninety-percent qualify for free or reduced lunch. I am currently teaching them global studies.
My students and I would very much appreciate an overhead projector to learn about new places and skills; and a cart to keep all our pens and overheads organized. Many times I have pictures that I would like to show them when we are discussing a historical event and have to use black and white copies to hand out. If I had an overhead projector, I could print out colored transparencies and we could discuss them together as a class. In addition, I could work with them on their writing in a more cohesive fashion. We could work on essay writing by pointing out to the structures of an essay and also by asking them to edit paragraphs as a group. Learning to write essays is a necessary skill that will serve them well in college. I would love to be able to teach them skills that can be used across the high school curriculum as well as later on in their college years.
With your generosity, I will be able to incorporate using an overhead project as part of my daily teaching routine. Not only is this visual tool an excellent way to teach, but it also works as a great classroom management strategy.
Your generosity will ensure that my students are using all of their senses to learn and that they are also acquiring the necessary skills to enter college.
