My Students
As a teacher in a low-income/high poverty middle school, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. For many students, school is seen as an escape or safe haven from the constant violence and turmoil they experience in their home lives.
My school is nowhere near perfect, but it has the potential to be an amazing learning environment; we just need the right support from the parents, students, and community, such as yourself.
The achievement gap is real and I witness this on a daily basis. The first step in attempting to close the gap is ensuring that students have the necessary materials and technology to succeed. It is near impossible to incorporate 21st Century skills without access to working computers and the internet.
I could rattle on and on about data of how my school is unaccredited, many are behind grade level, make-up is 98% African American in a poverty stricken environment, 99% of the students receive free or reduced lunch, etc. The problem I see with that is the fact that those are just numbers on paper. In spite of that, I refuse to simply view my students as just a number.
My Project
My students love communication. They are, however, not good at expressing it through writing. My goal is to provide them with access to a computer to teach them how to research information, break down a primary source, and publish a short review of that on the class website.
By using this computer, my students' typing skills, writing skills and research skills will soar to new heights!
In a school with limited technology in a state that tests their ability to type up an essay, this computer will do wonders for the students that I teach! My students crave the ability to publish their work, this computer would allow them to successfully achieve their goals!
