My students attend a high-performing middle school in Newark. They are an ambitious group of students who constantly dream big.
As a school we are trying to provide a caring and loving environment for them where they are constantly pushed to strive for their best.
We are trying to help them become leaders of the future.
There are 91 students in the sixth grade and each of them have become such strong historians over there time in 6th grade. As 6th graders they are already analyzing primary source documents and writing high school-level document based questions (AP History Exam).
My Project
My school has an amazing culture of reading. In the hallways during transitions and during any free time, students are glued to their independent reading books. It's truly a sight to see!
A majority of the books I've chosen for this history library specifically have African American protagonists, where students can read about characters who look similar to them.
For example, one of the book sets is "African American Historical Fiction."
My students are lucky to have access to a variety of fiction, however, as a history teacher, I want them to read historical fiction and non-fiction, as well! Each and every book in this project will be put to use in opening the minds of brilliant sixth graders!
