Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our students are a full spectrum with a diverse campus in race, culture, socioeconomic status and interests. Our campus serves approximately 635 students, grades 7th thru 8th and between the ages of 12 to 14. Ethnically our students are approximately 87% minorities with 45% being Latin American, 26% African American, and 13% Asian and Pacific Islander.

We have a variety of different learning challenges and needs that our students deal with on a daily basis.

Twenty-five percent of our students are currently an English Language Learner. Our Special Education students make up 10% of the entire site. We are working hard to ensure that all of our students get their needs met.

My Project

Hispanic Heritage Month starts September 15, and I am excited to celebrate and honor Hispanic Heritage in my classroom. When picking books for this series, I thought about the stories, people, and issues I wanted to focus on during this month.

Some of the issues that I have picked to talk about are DACA, Children Detained at the Southern Border of the United States, Deportation, and the path many take to enter the US.

To make sure that we are authentically talking about DACA and detention is to have books from a person's perspective. Books like Hear My Voice/Escucha mi Voz: The Testimonies of Children Detained at the Southern Border will help students hear people who are their age or young and feel the experience these young people are having. Respectfully talking about DACA is so important in a community where this issue is something students may be dealing with. I wanted to pick a story that students could find a connection to or see as part of their story. I also picked some books that talk about deportation in a meaningful and accessible way. Students can connect to the idea of families being split or feel safe to start the conversation about what happened in their own family.

I also want to talk about some strong Trailblazers who have made history. Some of the heroes covered in these books are Alicia Alonso ( Dancer), Sonia Sotomayor (Supreme Court Judge), Cesar Chavez (Activist), Jose Hernandez(Astronaut), Lin-Manuel Miranda (Playwright), and Julian Castro (Politician). This seems like a good place to start and grow from.

Through these courageous conversations and the intentional lesson, I want my students to create a bulletin board of the issues and people they are learning about.
