This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My dual-language third graders are inquisitive, bright, and enthusiastic learners. They are very interested in the upcoming presidential election and are eager to discuss our political process. So far, our conversations are based on second-hand information. It’s clear that my students are curious about the democratic process and how voting can impact an election. I’m excited to take this opportunity to teach them how people can participate in government.

As the election nears, one of my goals is to empower my students with the historical context that highlights the importance of voting by exposing them to children's literature in English and Spanish that teaches them about the election process in the United States.

My Project

After completing researching about the election process by reading these books, students will write letters to community members sharing what they learned about participating in government. They will also write to relatives to encourage them to register and vote. Students will also write letters to City Council members and the Mayor to voice their concerns about problems in their community. I know that literature is often one of the best ways to explore a new topic for children, and learning about the importance of voting is no different!

They will practice letter writing and learn about elections, voting, and other ways to be responsible citizens.
