My Students

Recently, two teens were murdered in New Haven, CT. These tragic events reinforced my decision to engage students in constructive activities AFTER school. Our club needs equipment to get students outside, engaged in meaningful work, and exhibiting PRIDE in their school community. Thank you.

Our students come from different communities in New Haven, CT and the surrounding towns.

Approximately 75% of our students receive free and reduced price lunch. Our students are energetic, proud, and intelligent. Our amazing students continue to succeed in the face of adversity. I hope to harness the energy of our students into the Panther Garden Club. Students are excited to begin a sustained project to beautify their school campus and grow food to supplement the school cafeteria with healthy, local options. At the same time, it will be an opportunity to learn a new skill and establish a connection with nature. Students are eager to get their hands dirty and reap the benefits of their hard work, all the while becoming active participants in their community.

My Project

Students will use the equipment requested for many years to come. The initial stages of the project will include digging out garden beds, moving soil into raised beds we construct, and establishing a space for students to relax at picnic tables and admire the scenery. Once we are able to clear out the space for our garden, we will construct raised beds to grow food. The perimeter of the garden will include flowers and shrubs to attract beneficial insects and add beauty to our school. The materials will be used yearly for maintenance work and possible expansion projects. My students need a wheelbarrow, a shovel and a hoe to clear space for garden beds. The gardens will also be used by Chemistry classes (testing soil pH), Environmental Science classes (sustainability), and Earth Science (carbon cycle), and Biology (botany, ecology, and photosynthesis). Students will be able to gain a deeper understanding of concepts through firsthand experiences.

Now more than ever, our students need opportunities to discover interests to engage in after school.

The garden will provide our students with feelings of ownership and pride in their school. If we graduate a group of students with a new passion that they can pursue for years to come, then we will have succeeded.
