Hightech and Housekeeping

My students need an Elmo slate so that we can edit our work on the white board, a rolling book cart to hold our writer's notebooks, and a hand vacuum to keep our space clean.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The majority of my fabulous fourth graders (98%) come from bilingual households and receive free or reduced price lunch. Many of these children have responsibilities at home (making dinner, caring for younger siblings because parents are at work, etc.) that makes it difficult for them to function at one hundred percent when they come to school. They take what they have, however, and make the most of it. They may not be able to provide pencils or paper, but they are never without a smile.

My Project

Hurricane Harvey came through and redecorated our school in August. We are slowly getting everything back to a normal pace, but we are far from normal. My students are struggling to stay motivated this year, and I have a feeling it is because of the stress that they experienced in the beginning. If we had the wireless Elmo slate, we could pass it from student to student as we dissected our S.T.A.A.R. grammar question each day. I am sure that the engagement level would skyrocket if the kids got to underline nouns and verbs wirelessly from their desks! Another need that we have is a rolling cart to hold our writers' notebooks. I see about 65 to 70 students a day, and each one of those kids has a composition book. We often have to pick them up and pass them out, and they are NOT light. A rolling cart would keep them compact, clean, and mobile. Finally, we are in desperate need of a push vacuum. The kids are constantly tracking in dirt, leaves, and who knows what else. Our custodians are overloaded as it is, so I feel that we could teach our kids responsibility and keep our room clean at the same time if we had our own little vacuum.
